Expert/M × Upswitch: SME valuation from the Belgian Adsolut suite

Expert/M (Wolters Kluwer Adsolut Suite) runs on-premise at thousands of Belgian accounting firms. How the Upswitch connection normalises EBITDA from the Expert/M saldibalans XML — no live API, same MAR classification and defensibility checks as our cloud connectors.

Expert/M is the bookkeeping module inside Wolters Kluwer’s Adsolut Suite. It sits next to Adsolut Personal Income Tax, Adsolut Corporate Income Tax and Adsolut Annual Accounts, and is installed on the firm’s workstation or office server. The desktop version has no live REST API: integration runs through the documented XML import/export schema (Extra → Importeren externe applicaties → XML → Expert/M).

Expert/M is still overwhelmingly on-premise. An SME valuation engine that only supports cloud APIs locks out a large slice of Flemish fiduciaries. That is why we built an XML upload path that hits the same pipeline as Yuki / Exact / Silverfin.

1. The Expert/M integration challenge

Expert/M Plus ships with a well-documented XML import/export schema. The accountant exports the trial balance (saldibalans) or journal as XML, and Upswitch reads that schema directly. No screen-share session, no manual CSV cut-and-paste: one file upload per fiscal year, and the valuation engine has what it needs.

  • In Expert/M Plus, export via Extra → Importeren externe applicaties → XML → Expert/M (trial balance or journal).
  • Upload the XML in the Upswitch portal: pick the dossier, the fiscal year, and the file.
  • The engine validates the PCMN account codes, maps to MAR classes, and runs the same classification and normalisation pipeline as the live cloud connectors.

2. What Expert/M data delivers for EBITDA normalisation

Expert/M books against the Belgian PCMN (Plan Comptable Minimum Normalisé) chart of accounts. That is the exact same classification Octopus and Silverfin emit on BE dossiers, which means identical MAR routing (class 60 → COGS, 62 → personnel, 6200* → director compensation, 63 → depreciation, 65 → financial expense, 67 → taxes, 68/69 → extraordinary).

  • Saldibalans per fiscal year (account, label, debit, credit, balance).
  • PCMN account numbers from 4 to 8 digits — our classifier recognises both the full code and the 2-digit class prefix.
  • Period information (start/end of the fiscal year) so non-calendar fiscal years are automatically flagged.
  • CODA and SODA movements can be loaded for cash-flow signals, but are not required for the baseline valuation.

A typical Expert/M dossier: an Antwerp family manufacturing SME with €4.2M revenue. After the Expert/M extract, the engine flagged €92K one-off fit-out on account 611200 (booked as operating maintenance), €68K director compensation below the market median for a general manager, and €31K owner-related fuel on 611100. Normalised EBITDA: €507K vs €316K reported — 60% higher.

3. Activation for Expert/M accountants

In the Upswitch portal you connect Expert/M the same way you connect any other provider: dossier code + company name + (optional) VAT number. Then you upload the saldibalans XML for each fiscal year you want to value. No API tokens, no OAuth redirect, no waiting on partner onboarding with Wolters Kluwer. The connection works today, with the Expert/M install you already have.

4. Expert/M in Belgian normalisation practice

Belgian accounting firms running Expert/M typically serve a mix of family businesses, regulated professions and SMEs. In that segment we see recurring patterns: director compensation below market, private use of company assets booked as operating expense, retained earnings used as a dividend alternative. Our MAR classifier surfaces these via the PCMN classes and flags them in the Defensibility Co-pilot.

Normalised EBITDA is benchmarked against the Upswitch Index sector ranges. For a Belgian manufacturing or services SME, the accountant sees their normalised EBITDA next to the live market multiples for that sector.

Frequently asked questions

Does the integration work without Expert/M Online?+

Yes. Most firms run Expert/M on-premise. Our connection uses the XML saldibalans export every Expert/M Plus install ships with (Extra → Importeren externe applicaties → XML → Expert/M). No extra licence required.

How long does the first connection take per client?+

The saldibalans export in Expert/M Plus takes 1-2 minutes per fiscal year. The upload + parsing in the Upswitch portal is real-time. For a new client with three historical years you are typically done in under 10 minutes.

What about CODA and SODA files? Does Upswitch need them?+

Not for the baseline valuation. The trial balance contains everything we need for MAR classification and EBITDA normalisation. CODA/SODA adds cash-flow detail we can read for live cash-flow signals, but for the SME valuation it is optional.

Upswitch is the M&A infrastructure layer for the European SME economy. Defensible valuations and structured transaction matching for the lower mid-market.
